TRAFFIC Railway technology for the highest demands www.binder-connector.com SPECIALIST FOR CIRCULAR CONNECTORS RAILWAY TECHNOLOGY FOR THE HIGHEST DEMANDS In the field of railway technology, the requirements for reliability, safety and efficiency are of crucial importance. These stringent requirements not only apply to the rail vehicles themselves, but also to the diverse components and systems that are installed in the trains and the infrastructure surrounding railway operations. Connectors play a central role in the signal transmission and power supply of the systems and are therefore an important component for smooth operation. Products from binder are already being used in various industries, especially in the industrial sector. This means that the products are already designed for harsh environments. The requirements of the railway sector even overlap in a few points with the requirements of the industrial sector. Particular attention is paid to the standards DIN EN 50155, DIN EN 61373 and DIN EN 45545. RELEVANT STANDARDS ACC. TO EU REGULATION 2016/797 AND 1302/2014 DIN EN 50155 Railway applications – Vehicles – Electronic equipment The DIN EN 50155 standard stands for the highest standards in the rail industry. It specifies requirements to ensure the safety, reliability and durability of these devices in the challenging conditions of rail traffic. It is an internationally recognized standard for the requirements of electronic equipment used in the environment of rail vehicles. The standard requires electronic components to withstand a range of different mechanical, electrical and climatic tests. An essential requirement is the vibration and shock test in accordance with DIN EN 61373, which is part of DIN EN 50155. This standard specifies the requirements and test methods to ensure that components and systems in rail vehicles can withstand the stresses caused by vibrations and shocks during operation. 2 DIN EN 45545 Fire protection in railway vehicles By complying with the DIN EN 45545-2 standard, manufacturers and operators ensure that their electrotechnical components do not jeopardise the safety of passengers and staff in the event of a fire. Depending on the component and area of application, the standard defines various requirement sets and hazard levels (HL), which make it easier for users to select components. Certain components are defined in the standard as ‘listed components’, whereby precise requirements are placed on the products in order to comply with the standard. For ‘non-listed components’, the standard defines specific sets of requirements, taking into account the exposed area and the location (inside or outside) of the component. All other components that do not fulfil any of these requirement sets are tested using the so-called grouping rule in order to validate them for use in rail vehicles. The grouping rule enables a structured assessment of materials and components with regard to their fire behaviour. This initially excludes all components that have already been assessed and validated using the listed and non-listed component procedure. No requirements are set for most connectors if the properties and area of application fulfil the following conditions: Is a test using a grouping rule in accordance with DIN EN 45545 required? exposed area ≤ 0.2 m2 yes flammable mass ≤ 10 g no ... yes Component touches ... other component >10 g or unclassified component no ... no Test completed yes ... The decisive factor in the grouping rule is ultimately the sum of the combustible mass (fire load) of all components in the defined group. The following rules are used to check the group: RULE 1 If the mass of the group is <100 g indoors and <400 g outdoors, no requirements are placed on this component. RULE 2 If the flammable mass of the grouped components is >100 g indoors and ≤500 g outdoors, one of the components must be tested in accordance with R24. RULE 3 If rule 2 is exceeded, the components must be considered unlisted and assessed according to these criteria. 3
