New Coalition of Wind Energy Suppliers and NGOs to Launch Wind Campaign at Climate Talks

Date: 31 / 10 / 2008

Beijing, 31 October 2008. Wind energy could be supplying 12% of the world’s electricity needs and saving 1.5 billion tonnes of CO2 a year by 2020 according to a coalition of wind energy companies, associations and NGO’s determined to find practical solutions to climate change.

With plans to launch a Wind Power Works campaign at the COP 14 climate meeting in December, the coalition will promote bold emissions targets and a rapid deployment of wind energy around the world in a bid to achieve the IPCC target of a decline in emissions by 2020.

New Report: 10 billion tonne saving in CO2 possible with wind energy by 2020

Date: 30 / 10 / 2008

Wind power is key technology to prevent dangerous climate change.

Wind power could produce 12% of the world’s energy needs and save 10 billion tones of CO2 within 12 years, according to a new report published today.

The ‘Global Wind Energy Outlook 2008’, published by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and Greenpeace International, looks at the global potential of wind power up to 2050 and found that it could play a key part in achieving a decline in emissions by 2020, which the IPCC indicates is necessary to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. By 2020, wind power could save as much as 1.5 billion tonnes of CO2 every year, which would add up to over 10 billion tonnes in this timeframe. The report also explains how wind energy can provide up to 30% of the world’s electricity

GWEC is pleased to announce our activities at the COP 14, in Poznan,
Poland at the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference.

Joins us at the Wind Power Works Pavilion (Hall 11) during COP 14 on 4-11 December to learn more about
wind energy, visit our spectacular photo exhibition and enjoy free coffee.

The Wind Power Works campaign aims to show policy makers that wind energy already provides clean and fuel free electricity in over 70
countries of the world. It is a proven and reliable technology that makes sense,
not only for the environment, but also in economic terms.
