Clarity is crucialFT Climate Change magazine , 2 December 2008 - Can business “save the planet”? The answer is unquestionably “no”, if one means by this “business, on its own”. Businesses respond to incentives. But climate change is what economists call an “externality”. Businesses will respond – or, in the technical jargon, “internalise” externalities – only if it is in their interests to do so. It is government's job to ensure that it is.

Brazil plans to cut deforestation by 70 pct over 10 yearsAFP, 1 December 2008 - The Brazilian government on Monday unveiled a plan to cut the deforestation of the Amazon by 70 percent over the next decade. It is the first time Brazil, home to the largest area of tropical woodland on the planet, has set a target for reducing the damage wrought by illegal loggers and ranchers.

WBCSD President Speaks at UNEP Launch Meeting of the Green Economy Initiative

Geneva, 2 December 2008 - WBCSD President Björn Stigson spoke yesterday at the launch meeting of the Green Economy Initiative, convened by the United Nations Environment Programme in Geneva. The meeting gathered policymakers, business executives, analysts, representatives from non-governmental and civil society organizations, and media to share their perspectives.

Minding the Carbon Store: Rio Tinto

Geneva, 24 November 2008 - An innovative project developed in 2006 provided Rio Tinto's aluminium business, Rio Tinto Alcan, with the opportunity to explore offsets as part of a broader climate change strategy. The Minding the Carbon Store project has saved approximately 12,000 hectares of native vegetation from being cleared and generated around one million tons of fully verified greenhouse gas abatement (carbon credits) through avoided deforestation.

Geneva, 20 November 2008 - KPMG describes itself as a global network of professional services firms providing audit, tax and advisory services, with over 123,000 professionals working together to deliver value in 145 countries around the world. So what does KPMG have to do with rare wildlife in Botswana? In fact, KPMG South Africa worked with the United Nations Development Programme and the government of Botswana to develop an endangered species national policy, implementation strategy and action plan.

Saving Through Biodiversity - DuPont

Geneva, 13 November 2008 - Intensive agriculture had turned Spain's 325-hectare Tamón Valley in Asturias into an area with low biological diversity dominated by two huge monocultures: fields and eucalyptus plantations. In 1990 DuPont started a greenfield project in the Valley so as to both increase local biodiversity and save the company money.
