Ontario's power grid can be 100% renewable by 2027

Ontario can obtain 100% of its grid-supplied electricity from renewable sources by 2027 if Energy Minister George Smitherman adopts the recommendations in OCAA’s new report, Ontario’s Green Future. The report’s three key recommendations are build on success; take the lid off clean power; and make nuclear the last choice, not the first.

Ontario's Green Future

Ontario's Green FutureHow would you spend $26-68 billion dollars? Would you drop it all on high-risk nuclear plants or use it to transform Ontario into a green energy leader? Right now, this is the question facing Ontario and it looks like the government is intent on sticking with the status quo -- more handouts for nuclear, leftovers for renewable power and energy efficiency improvements. We think it is time for a responsible energy plan in Ontario that ends special treatment for nuclear power. If you agree or want to find out more, visit our new website OntariosGreenFuture.ca.

Conservation vs. New Supply

This Ontario Clean Air Alliance Research factsheet summarizes the Ontario Power Authorities spending on new supply sources compared to its spending on efficiency and conservation methods.  The factsheet finds that for every megawatt of efficiency and conservation, the OPA has contracted for 18.8 megawatts of new supply.  It also finds that new supply is costing the OPA six times more per megawatt than efficiency measures.
