Economic Advisory Committee in Washington, DC

November 13, 2008 — The Institute held its fall EAC meeting in Washington, DC, on November 13 and 14, 2008. The event, taking place at the IIF offices, was attended by more than 50 leading economists and country risk officers from around the world. Graeme Wheeler, Managing Director of Operations at the World Bank delivered the keynote speech at the dinner. Reza Moghadam, Director of Strategy, Policy and Review Department at the International Monetary Fund, also made a presentation on the IMF’s new lending facility.

Group of 20 Summit Provides Opportunity for Far-Reaching Reforms, says IIF. Financial services firms recognize their responsibility to restore trust.

November 10, 2008 — The leadership of the Institute of International Finance stated in a letter to the Group of 20 that the private sector takes responsibility for the shortcomings in the risk management of financial institutions that the crisis has exposed. The IIF’s leaders said, “The private financial sector recognizes and is acting upon its responsibility to contribute to the restoration of trust and confidence in financial markets.”

Emerging Markets Briefing

November 5, 2008 — The massive and coordinated global policy response shows increasing signs of tempering the growing global liquidity crisis, lifting virtually all emerging markets in the last week. Evidence of economic weakness is widespread and growing, however, suggesting that recession worries will endure even as liquidity concerns fade.
