When first launched back in 1994, the ASYC2 range from Metrix® quickly became a veritable metrological reference, with its high specifications and "closed box" adjustments, both of which were at the time unheard-of in field instruments.
Today's MTX MOBILES (the MTX 3281, MTX 3282, and MTX 3283) are worthy members of this family; they, too, stand out at the high end of the hand-held multimeter market with their 100,000-counts resolution, their basic precision of 0.02%, their pass band of up to 200 kHz, and many innovations that herald a new generation of Field Multimeters.
A design at home in the laboratory and in the field
Their unique architecture, with a swivelling screen and "electronic switch", and their various power supply modes (mains, rechargeable storage batteries in the instrument, or throw-away batteries), is suited to both desktop and hand-held use.
A carrying bag has even been specially designed for work with both hands off the instrument and free to hold the cords, eliminating the need for attachment accessories, which can be awkward and are not always perfectly practical.
Less handling
When the mobile cord is connected to the single "Ampere" terminal or to the "Volt" terminal, the corresponding function is automatically selected in AC+DC mode, with automatic range selection as default, cutting handling to a minimum. The current measurement is made at a single switch setting, smoothly, over six ranges extending from a few hundreds of microamperes to twenty amperes.
This makes connection errors and the destruction of small protecting fuses a thing of the past. The measurement functions are selected directly by the hand that holds the instrument, by a simple thumb press on one of the specialised keys of the electronic switch.
An original display for this type of instrument
For reading convenience, a huge high-resolution graphic screen has been chosen: display of bilingual texts, multiple digital display (four display units), analogue bar graph, and graph of time variations. The orientable back-lit display is always easy to read, whatever the position of the multimeter: hanging, standing on a level surface, carried.
Technology to serve safety
In addition to the automatic consistency of the cords and commands, the MTX MOBILE - IEC 61010 1000 V / CAT. III, 600 V / CAT. IV - has a field housing of moulded self-extinguishing plastic. The flap on the back is designed to provide protected and secured compartments for the batteries and for the single fuse, and cannot be opened with the measurement cords still connected.
Control of the measurement
With the all-new AUTOPEAK mode, changes of voltage or current range are based on the rapid acquisition of peaks, in order to avoid an untimely overshoot of the instrument's Peak Factor, which would produce an erroneous measurement without the user being aware of it.
Another innovation, the SPEC function, displays directly on the screen the tolerance of the measurement in progress; there is no need to search for it and calculate it.
The "preferred measurement" command directly calls up a specific measurement in regular use, defined in advance by the user. Then, when any physical value is measured, this key can be used to convert the scale and define the appropriate unit, and so obtain a direct reading of the original quantity, thereby avoiding any transcription error.
Finally, performance is always "tamed" using optional customer calibration software that makes periodic checks simpler, faster, and less expensive.
Everything needed to trap faults
The functions of these two general-purpose diagnostic tools, the multimeter and the recorder, are combined in the MTX MOBILE, which makes them the ideal field partners for maintenance work, adjustments, or even development.
Very simply, the graphic recording window provides a 3rd dimension - the evolution of the measurement over time - and an immediate preview.
The SURV key can be used to display and store, simultaneously, the minimum, maximum, and average values of the measurement
